How to Measure Round Cylindrical or Square Perfume Bottles for Your Custom Perfume Boxes

When it comes to designing and manufacturing perfume packaging, accurate measurements are key. A small error in how you write or read box dimensions can completely change the shape of the box — sometimes turning what should be a standard rectangular perfume box into a flat box with an elongated lid, similar to a coffin or a chocolate selection box!

To help our customers avoid these pitfalls, we’ve put together this simple guide on how to measure your perfume boxes correctly.

Why Box Measurements Matter

When we create custom perfume packaging, the dimensions you provide are the foundation of the entire design. If they are given in the wrong order, the box won’t fit your bottle properly, and the proportions could end up looking odd. Correct measurements save time, prevent costly reprints, and ensure your product presentation looks sleek and professional.

The Three Dimensions of a Box

Every box has three key measurements:

  1. Length (L) – The longest side of the box (usually left to right).
  2. Width (W) – The shorter side of the front face (usually front to back).
  3. Height (H) – The vertical measurement from the base to the top of the box.

Always write your measurements in this order:
Length × Width × Height

For example:
A box measuring 6 cm × 4 cm × 12 cm means:

  • Length: 6 cm
  • Width: 4 cm
  • Height: 12 cm

Common Mistake: The “Coffin-Style” Box

Some customers send us measurements in a different order, such as Height × Width × Length or mix them up randomly. This can result in a flat box with an elongated lid, similar to a coffin or a chocolate selection box, instead of the elegant rectangular perfume box you imagined.

That’s why it’s so important to stick to the standard industry order: Length × Width × Height.

Tips for Measuring Your Perfume Box

Write clearly and always note the unit (cm or mm).

Use a ruler or caliper for accuracy, especially for small boxes.

Measure the perfume bottle carefully, as these dimensions determine the internal space of the box. You may allow a few extra millimeters , usually 2mm, for padding or inserts, etc. if needed.

Double-check your numbers before sending them to us.

Measuring a Round Perfume Bottle

When measuring a round perfume bottle for a box, you only need two measurements: the diameter and the height.

  • Diameter (Width & Length): Measure across the widest part of the bottle’s body. This measurement will be taken from under the bottle, through the center which is the widest part of the bottle. Since the bottle is round, the diameter is the same for both width and length, making it a simple measurement.
  • Height: Measure from the base to the top of the cap or lid. This ensures the box is tall enough to fit the entire bottle.

Recording these two measurements accurately guarantees a snug, secure fit for any round perfume bottle.

Visual Guide

We know that sometimes written instructions aren’t enough. That’s why we’ve also released a YouTube video tutorial showing exactly how to measure your perfume boxes correctly. If you’re more of a visual learner, you’ll find that video especially helpful.

Correctly measuring your perfume box is the first step to creating packaging that truly complements your fragrance. By following the simple Length × Width × Height order, you’ll avoid the dreaded coffin-style box and get packaging that fits beautifully.
